> Defining a Root-cause Hierarchy

Before establishing a root-cause hierarchy, define problem codes and assign classes to those codes via the Problem codes form (ONRECO).

Establish a hierarchy of problem causes and effects. The root cause is the most fundamental cause of problems. The parent is the cause, and the child is the effect. Always define causes from the top level down.

If the child problem code has children of its own, select the child record in the bottom section, and then click Up/down. Datastream 7i displays the information with the child code in the center section.

Structure both general and non general codes. Non general codes are class-related, and they show only if the equipment’s class on the work order matches the class of the non general problem code. Do not mix general codes with non general codes.

Follow these steps to define a root-cause hierarchy.

  1. Open the Root-cause hierarchy form (WDROOT).

  2. Query for the problem code for which to define children. Datastream 7i displays the parent records in the top section and the child records in the bottom section.

  3. Child—Click to select the child problem codes for the parent.

  4. Choose File | Save from the menu bar. Datastream 7i saves the information to the database.
