> Using Barcode Character Prefixes

A barcode prefix is a special character at the beginning of the barcode that indicates the type of entity being scanned, such as a part, piece of equipment, store, or bin. For example, the default prefix character for a part is P. When you scan a barcode label for a wing nut (NUT), the data becomes PNUT. The barcode reader recognizes the P and stores the item code in the part data column.

A work order activity should never have a character prefix. The activity ID always follows the work order number. For example, you might have a work order with a number of 10450 and an activity of 10. Always use a predetermined amount of fixed space or fill characters to separate the two. The result might be 10450#10.
